June 15 (UPI) -- A steer that escaped a slaughterhouse has won a temporary stay of execution after fleeing to a residential neighborhood, where it was tranquilized.

Fisher Ham and Meat Co. in Spring said a customer was dropping off a steer to be slaughtered about 9:30 a.m. Friday when the bovine bolted through a gap between the trailer and the chute.

Witnesses said the steer made its way through four lanes of traffic before arriving in Spring's Villages of Bridgestone subdivision, where it led police on an hours-long chase.

"It's not every day you come out and see a cow running down the street," resident Jeanette Dooley told KPRC-TV. "We came outside and we saw three cop cars and there was a cow coming down the street."

Police, animal control officers, and residents attempted unsuccessfully to corner the steer for several hours, until it was finally trapped in a cul-de-sac.

The steer was tranquilized and returned to its owner, but its escape was partially successful -- the tranquilizers now in its system mean it can't be slaughtered for at least 30 days.
