"It was amazing that so many people wanted to be part of something so special," volunteer coordinator Jason Dees. "It's nice to bring the record back to the United States -- where it belongs, in my opinion."
About 2,000 spectators arrived at the speedway to witness the creation of the pizza on Saturday, which surpassed the previous record holder which measured 6,082 feet and was made in Italy last year.
Guinness World Records' standards required the pizza to measure at least 20 inches in width and be topped with sauce and cheese.
The record committee also required that none of the pizza be thrown away, so a handful of spectators were given the opportunity to sample the historic pizza and the rest was given to local food banks.
The record attempt was also subject to San Bernardino County food safety standards that required no portion of the massive pizza sit at room temperature for more than four hours.
Pizza makers were required to wheel a portable oven along the length of a scaffolding to cook the 8,000 pounds of dough, 5,600 pounds of sauce, and 3,600 pounds of cheese into the final product.
Dees said it took more than a year for Pizzaovens.com and other sponsors to coordinate the record-breaking event and thanked the Auto Club Speedway for helping to make it possible.
"It was a mammoth project," he said. "Everybody there was very welcoming and they catered to our needs."
