June 9 (UPI) -- A team of Lego experts constructed a massive wind turbine out of Lego bricks to celebrate the company's decision to use renewable energy.

The team spent 600 hours constructing the 25-foot tall wind turbine to claim the Guinness World Record for "Largest Lego brick wind turbine."

A total of 146,251 Lego bricks were used to create the massive wind turbine that was put on display outside the Liverpool ONE shopping center in England.

Crowds, including several school children, gathered at the shopping center as Lego celebrated its shift to balancing 100 percent of its energy use with energy from renewable sources.

"We see children as our role models and as we take action in reducing our environmental impact as a company, we will also continue to work to inspire children around the world by engaging them in environmental and social issues," Lego Group CEO Bali Padda said.

Guinness World Records adjudicator Anna Orford rode a cherry picker to measure the record-breaking Lego turbine prior to presenting the group with a plaque commemorating the record.

After its debut, the Lego turbine was relocated to the LEGOLAND Windsor Resort for permanent display.
