May 22 (UPI) -- A Tennessee man driving home from a barbecue festival in Memphis was pulled over on the interstate by an officer who spotted a man sleeping on the car's trunk.

Carl Webb said he and his wife left Barbecue Fest in downtown Memphis Thursday night without looking at the rear of their vehicle, as they had backed into a parking space.

Webb said he was on the interstate before a Memphis Police Officer pulled him over.

"The officer came up and he said, 'Mister are you aware there's a body on your trunk?,' and that did not register. He goes, 'Mr. I'm not messing with you. There's a body on your trunk.' So I got out. We walked around and sure enough there he was still hanging on, still unconscious, just lying there," Webb told WHBQ-TV.

Webb said he had driven about 14 miles with the sleeping passenger curled up on his 14-inch-wide trunk.

"I have no explanation other than that little lip right there saved his life," Webb said.

He said the officer woke the sleeping man, who appeared disoriented and nearly wandered into traffic.

"I hope he takes a good look at where he put himself and the hazard that he had open up to himself. It would've been death," Webb said.

The man was taken away in the police cruiser, but it was unclear whether he would face any charges.
