Swarm of bees invades Kansas City Royals stadium

May 9 (UPI) -- A swarm of bees invaded the Kansas City Royals baseball stadium before their game against the Cleveland Indians.

The Indians shared a photo of the thousands of bees gathered around a red, white and blue banner near the front row of one of the upper levels of the stadium on Sunday.

"They're eating our flesh off! Save yourselves," the team joked.

Royals tarp crew member Jeff Diekmann, who is also a beekeeper, made his way to the upper deck and managed to remove the bees.

Diekmann not only managed to remove the bees without causing them any harm, but performed the operation without wearing a bee suit.

Royals manager Ned Yost expressed the importance of preserving bees after the team had a similar encounter with a bee swarm before an exhibition game in 2016.

"It's just important for the environment," he said. "I saw a study a couple years ago where the honey bee was declining and they cannot figure out why. And I started looking at it and studying it, the importance of what they do, in terms of pollination with all the crops. Especially the fruit trees and stuff like that. They're vital to the environment."
