Hammerhead shark frees big tarpon from fisherman's line

By
Ben Hooper

May 4 (UPI) -- A fisherman off the Florida coast was on the verge of reeling in a big tarpon when a massive hammerhead shark came along and freed the fish.

Ronnie Green, host of A Fishing Story on Destination America sportsman channel, said he was out on his boat recently when a 13- to 15-foot hammerhead grabbed the huge tarpon he managed to hook.

The ensuing struggle was caught on video and posted to Facebook by A Fishing Story.

"The shark came out of nowhere," Green said told WTVT-TV, "and tried to attack the tarpon that was on our line. It broke the line while trying to eat the compromised fish, but we were relieved to see the fish get away."

Green said the shark appeared to have been successful only in freeing the fish, rather than eating it.

"I did not land the fish but the tarpon will live to fight again," Green said.
