Konami code unlocks Easter egg surprise on Canadian banknote's website

April 11 (UPI) -- The Bank of Canada is offering up a virtual Easter egg hunt to promote its new $10 bill with a special code to enter on its website.

The Easter egg from a 1980s video game appears on the banknote and the website unlocks a surprise.

In technology, an Easter egg is a hidden feature offering bonus material. They are often found in video games, and DVD and Blu-ray movies

Enter the right series of keys and the Canadian national anthem plays while the screen fills with tiny animated banknotes.

PC Magazine reported the activation code is a series of 10 keystrokes identical to a cheat present in many video games from the Japanese studio Konami. The code was first included in many games for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the late 1980s.

"The Bank of Canada's web team thought the Konami code was a fun way to celebrate Canada's 150th anniversary of confederation," Bank of Canada spokeswoman Josianne Menard said.

The code is: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a.
