Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe April 10 (UPI) -- Volunteer rescuers from a Florida veterinary school spent five hours digging to free a 10-year-old pug that plunged into a 30-foot sinkhole in her owner's yard. Owners Patricia Langston and Laurel Johanson said the dog, Cookie, was coming back from scratching herself on the fence in their Trenton back yard Tuesday evening when the rain-saturated ground opened up beneath the dog and she fell deep into the sinkhole. Advertisement The Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office dispatched a county Fire Rescue crew to the scene, The rescuers summoned help from the Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine, and the volunteer crew soon arrived with equipment to dig before lowering a team member, Jenny Groover, into the sinkhole and hoisting her back out with the uninjured pug in tow.
