Picture frames at New York airport concealed 14 pounds of cocaine

March 23 (UPI) -- Customs officials at a New York airport said a woman's attempt to smuggle 14 pounds of cocaine in wooden frames was anything but "picture perfect."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Fabiola Guerrero Mendoza of Mexico arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport from Mexico City on March 21 and CBP agriculture specialists noticed an anomaly on X-ray images of the three wooden picture frames in her checked luggage.

The frames were found to be concealing 14 pounds of a white powder that tested positive for cocaine.

The agency said the "passenger thought she had framed a picture-perfect concealment method, however U. S. Customs and Border Protection officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport exposed her plan."

"CBP Officers remain ever vigilant in protecting the United States from the distribution of these dangerous drugs, regardless of the concealment methods employed by these would-be smugglers," said Leon Hayward, acting director of CBP's New York Field Operations.

Mendoza was turned over to Port Authority police to face narcotics smuggling charges in Queens County District Court.
