March 22 (UPI) -- The University of Houston announced the death of one of its most beloved residents, a white-tailed squirrel, as well as plans to have the animal stuffed.

The university tweeted on its official account Monday that the squirrel, known to students and faculty by its white tail and white nose, had died.

"With sadness, we share that an unusual campus legend -- the white tailed squirrel -- has peacefully passed away. Thanks for the memories," the tweet read.

"Legend has it that if you saw the squirrel on your test day, you would get an A," student Odalis Garcia told KPRC-TV.

The cause of the squirrel's death was not revealed, but a GoFundMe page set up by supporters is raising funds to hold a memorial service and have the squirrel's remains preserved by a taxidermist.

"The thought of future coogs not being able to see this salacious squirrel has weighed heavy on the hearts of all students," the page reads. "In order to share the elegance of the white squirrel, we ask that you donate money to help us preserve it's legacy."

Students set up a shrine to their fallen rodent friend on campus featuring a poster board covered in messages from well-wishers and an accumulation of squirrel-friendly gifts including fries, ketchup packets, soft drinks, a tennis ball, and a candle.
