Arizona student says pizzeria refused order of 'gross' pineapple

By Ben Hooper

March 9 (UPI) -- An Arizona student's viral tweet claims a Tucson pizzeria refunded her $5 and refused to put "gross" pineapple on her pizza.

Ali, aka Twitter user @Try2ShootUsDown, posted a pair of photos to Twitter showing her pineapple-less pizza along with a $5 note taped inside the box and a message reading: "Couldn't bring myself to put pineapple on it. That's gross. Sorry."

She said the pizza contained the rest of her requested toppings: chicken, onion, and BBQ sauce.

Ali said the pizza came from an on-campus restaurant at the University of Arizona in Tucson, but she declined to name it.

She said she called the pizzeria to tell them she thought the incident was funny, but she would have rather had the pineapple pizza she ordered.

"They said they'd be happy to compensate me with coupons, but I just let it slide," she told Thrillist. "The $5 was enough!"

Ali's story has inspired a lot of skepticism on Twitter, but one friend claims she was on a FaceTime call with Ali when the pizza arrived and witnessed the unboxing.

Pineapple on pizza has become an unlikely source of international controversy lately, ever since Iceland President Gudni Thorlacius Johannesson said last month that he would ban pineapple on pizza if he could.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also weighed in on the issue.

"I have a pineapple. I have a pizza. And I stand behind this delicious Southwestern Ontario creation," he tweeted.
