Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Emergency responders in Florida captured a massive 10-1/2-foot Burmese python spotted by some schoolkids near an abandoned golf course.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said officials responded Monday afternoon to a location near the Homestead Golf Course at Keys Gate on a report of a large snake, but they hadn't expected a 10-foot, 6-inch Burmese python.

Members of the Venom One unit arrived and were pointed toward a brush area, where Lt. Scott Mulling located the snake and captured it with his bare hands.

The snake was taken to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission biologists.

"Burmese pythons, famous invaders of the Florida Everglades, although they pose little threat to humans, can take down animals as large as alligators and deer," Erika Benitez, public information officer for Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, said.
