Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe SIMSBURY, Conn., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- A deer chased by coyotes onto a frozen river in Connecticut spent hours stranded on the ice after it fell and was unable to get back up, officials said. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the deer was chased by coyotes Monday onto the frozen Farmington River in Simsbury and the animal fell on the ice and wound up with one leg through the ice. Advertisement Simsbury Animal Control Officer Mark Rudewicz arrived on the scene and officials watched as the deer was able to get its leg out of the hole in the ice, but appeared unable to stand up on its own. Rescuers spread some sand on the ice in the hopes of giving the deer some traction, but it remained unable to stand. A rescue worker eventually lowered herself onto the ice and pulled the deer to shore. The rescue was recorded on Facebook Live video by Fox 61. Rescuers said the deer was left to rest at the side of the river. They said the animal was expected to be able to leave the area on its own after a short recovery period. Officials said they will check back with the deer to make sure it was able to get back onto its feet. Advertisement "Human emotion is, you know, you want to rescue it. There's that humane component. It's an animal, we're here to help everyone," Rudewicz told NBC Connecticut.
