WINTERSET, Iowa, Jan. 6 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Iowa scooted a rowboat across the ice of a frozen river to rescue a dog that became stranded when it partially fell into the water.

Jerry Romine, 56, of Des Moines, spotted the 13-year-old Labrador mix, named Sam, while he was walking his own dog on a dirt road near Winterset.

Romine said he tried using a 50-foot tow rope to reach the stranded canine, but it wasn't long enough.

Winterset police and fire departments soon arrived on the scene and scooted a rowboat across the ice to reach Sam in a rescue Romine caught on camera.

Sam was taken to Winterset Veterinary Center, where veterinarians were able to warm him up and reunite him with his owner.
