LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A Nebraska Sherriff's deputy helped rescue a wounded hawk he found on the side of a local road.

Deputy Casey Dahlke shared photos of the small hawk which he found perched on top of a highway median.

"Oddly, It didn't respond or fly away when he was in close proximity and remained still," police said.

Dahlke was unable to reach a wildlife rescue service employee to assist him so he drove to a maintenance shop to find a box to transport the wounded bird.

He returned to the hawk to find it hadn't moved before placing it into the box and transporting it to Animal Control in Lincoln.

"And that's why I carry welding gloves," Dahlke said of the rescue.

Lincoln Animal Control informed Dahlke they would arrange to have the hawk transferred to Raptor Recovery in Omaha to be rehabilitated.
