DELPHI, Ind., Oct. 4 (UPI) -- Sheriff's deputies responding to an unusual wildlife call overnight found themselves face to face with an out-of-place trespasser: a wandering kangaroo.

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded about 11:30 p.m. Monday to a call from a woman who said her dog's barking led to the discovery of a kangaroo in the family's yard.

Deputies arrived at the scene and were able to quickly round up the non-native marsupial, which turned out to be a neighbor's escaped pet.

The kangaroo was reunited with its owner. Exotic animals are legal to own in Indiana with the proper permits.

A sheriff's office worker who took the Monday night call said the kangaroo's owner was enthusiastic about his love of exotic animals.

"Apparently he settled for a kangaroo when he couldn't afford the zebra he wanted to buy originally ...True story!!" the worker wrote on Facebook.
