FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A kayaker in Washington state captured video of his close encounter with a pod of orcas near the San Juan Islands.

Vikram Ramkumar posted a video to YouTube showing the killer whales he and his fellow kayakers encountered while paddling off the San Juan Islands.

The kayakers laugh and watch in amazement as the orcas surface near their boats, showing off their dorsal fins.

A man in the video points out an orca's saddle patch, the gray or white marking on the back of a killer whale that is used to identify the animals.
