"I guess I startled him a little bit and then he came close and just started exploring the tent," Weale told CTV News.
The video shows Weale and the bear watching each other through the thin mesh of the tent.
"I could feel that he wasn't aggressive, he was more just curious, so that's why I didn't get too worked up myself. But it was still an exercise just to remain calm through that whole thing," Weale said. "It was pretty wild."
Experts praised Weale for remaining calm during the encounter, but he was criticized for giving food to the animal.
"The bear can become habituated very quickly, and if he gets a food reward that's when there's a real issue," Provincial WildSafe British Columbia Coordinator Frank Ritcey told Global News.
