CHANGSHA, China, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- A Dutch man waited in an airport for 10 days after flying to China to meet up with a woman he met on an online dating app.

According to CCTV, Alexander Pieter Cirk, 41, flew to Changsha to meet a 26-year-old Chinese woman, who was only identified as Zhang, and refused to leave the airport until she arrived.

Photos show Cirk sprawled out on a row of seats in the airport as he waited 10 days for Zhang's arrival before being taken to the hospital for physical exhaustion, according to the BBC.

Cirk said he and Zhang met on a social networking app two months ago and decided to fly to China to meet her in person.

Zhang told a local television station that Cirk had informed her of his plans to visit her, but she thought it was a joke.

"We had advanced our romantic relationship but later he seemed a little callous towards me," she said. "One day he sent me a photo of air tickets abruptly and I thought it was a joke. He didn't contact me later."

Zhang said that she had been undergoing plastic surgery in another city when Cirk arrived and had her phone turned off.

She added that she remains willing to meet up with Cirk, who was scheduled to return to the Netherlands on Monday, when her recovery is complete and hopes to continue to pursue their relationship.
