BRITTANY, France, June 15 (UPI) -- A French sailor has embarked on a journey around the world accompanied by his pet hen named Monique.
Guirec Soudee, a 24-year-old from Brittany, France, has been traveling with his pet hen and chronicling their adventures on his Facebook page since May 2014.
He and Monique began their journey in the Canary Islands, but he told the BBC he almost had a different travel companion.
"I thought about a cat, but decided it would be too much effort to look after it," he said. "The hen was an ideal choice. It doesn't need that much looking after and I'm able to get eggs at sea. People told me it wouldn't work, that the hen would be too stressed and wouldn't lay eggs."
Soudee said that not only has Monique had no problem laying eggs, but has proven to be an overall exemplary travel companion.
"She follows me everywhere, and doesn't create any problems," he said. "All I need to do is shout 'Monique!' and she will come to me, sit on me, give me company. She is amazing."
The pair have experienced strange looks in Greenland and customs checks in Canada and are set to travel throughout the arctic, but their next destination is unknown.
"We're not sure yet," Soudee said. "We haven't talked about it yet, but we will."
