GREENSBORO, N.C., May 13 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man showed his determination by finishing a round of golf that was put on hold for seven months after he was struck by a car.

Kevin Reinert, a 61-year-old retired Air Force Colonel, returned to the 18th hole at the Starmount Country Club in Greensboro for the first time since he was struck by a car on the course on Oct. 6, 2015.

"I've had better scores on a golf course, but never a better time on a golf course," he told Fox 8 of his return to the course.

Reinert's hobby took a nightmarish turn when he was struck by a car driven by Isaiah Fox police said was in the middle of a crime spree.

He suffered severe ankle injuries, a broken femur and broke both knee caps requiring several months of recovery.

While not fully healed from his injuries, Reinert decided to take to the course and finish his game as a symbolic milestone on his road to recovery.

"My knees are killing me," he said. "But I've never been better in my life."

His son Phillip and daughter LeeAnne accompanied Reinert at the course for his triumphant return.

"I told my dad I wanted to be there the first time he went back on the golf course," Phillip said. "It was so emotional watching him get over the physical and mental hump."

"I've been looking forward to this day for seven months," LeeAnne said. "This is one of the best days of our lives for my family."

Reinert credited his daughter and his wife Jean, who are both nurses, for assisting in his recovery.

"You don't get through this by yourself. It's take a lot of medical professionals, family and friends," he said.

Following the completion of his round Reinert said he felt some closure about the issue and expressed he would be willing to forgive Fox under the right circumstances.

"As far as I'm concerned, I'm back," he said. "I think I will be able to forgive him once he shows some contrition, perhaps he will do that in a court of law. I have no contact with Mr. Fox between now and then, so I don't know if he's sorry or not."
