CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 6 (UPI) -- A North Carolina interstate was closed after a truck spilled tens of thousands of pounds of potatoes onto the road.
State troopers said one lane of Interstate 77 southbound was reopened after the accident in Charlotte on Friday morning left 50,000 pounds of potatoes strewn about the road.
According to the Charolette Observer, the driver told state troopers that he had fallen asleep at the wheel after hearing of truckers being arrested in North Carolina for pulling over to the roadside to sleep.
The truck was destroyed in the crash and fuel spilled onto the interstate and most of the potatoes.
Several hundred pounds found to be uncontaminated by cleanup crews will be donated to a food gleaning group.
State Highway Patrol Officer John Burgin said the driver did not suffer any serious injuries but would likely face a minor traffic charge for failing to control the vehicle.
