CAMBRIDGE, New Zealand, April 26 (UPI) -- A New Zealand police department shared tips for dealing with "stink" situations after a neighbor threw dog poop onto the canine owner's doorstep.

The Cambridge Police Department posted a photo to Facebook showing a doormat covered in doggie droppings as part of a dispute between two neighbors.

The post said police were called to deal with the "'stink' job" when the homeowner discovered a neighbor had thrown the droppings onto their doorstep. The neighbor told police the homeowner's dog had left the mess on their lawn.

"Now I know half of you are probably thinking 'serves them right' and trust me I know how annoying it is to have a neighbor's dog (or cat) doing naughty stuff on your lawn BUT there is a right way and a wrong way to deal with this," the post read.

Police recommended people in similar situations try talking to their neighbors, as "most people are pretty reasonable."

"Failing that, contact your local District Council and speak to the Animal Control Team. If possible, take photos of the offending animal and provide these to the council," the post said.

Police said the photo represented the "wrong way" to deal with such a situation.

"Don't take the law in to your own hands as its likely you will find yourself in more trouble than the offending dog!" police wrote.
