Idaho officer dubbed 'duckling liberator' after sewer rescue

EAGLE, Idaho, April 21 (UPI) -- An Idaho police officer is being hailed by colleagues as a "duckling liberator" after he rescued 10 baby ducks from a storm sewer.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office shared footage from Eagle Police Officer Zach Helbach's body camera showing his encounter with the waterfowl family about 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Helbach responded to a call from a resident about a distressed mother duck and he arrived to find the matriarch squawking at the storm sewer.

The footage shows the officer fish seven of the ducklings out of the sewer using a plastic container.

The sheriff's office said Helbach then went to a manhole down the street to rescue three more ducklings that had gotten separated from their siblings.

"Once I got them all out, mom got 'em all together and they just walked over to a nearby irrigation canal," Helbach said.
