Instagram apologizes for confusing Easter cake with 'a boob'

LONDON, April 6 (UPI) -- A London woman said her mother was temporarily banned by Instagram for posting a picture of an Easter cake that the social media site confused for "a boob."

Fiona Moseley tweeted Sunday that her mother, Sue Moseley, had been banned by Instagram after the website flagged her photo of a traditional simnel Easter cake as containing "sexually suggestive content or nudity."

The cake is decorated with 11 balls around the circumference, representing the 11 disciples, with a 12th ball in the middle representing Jesus.

"My mum's @instagram account was suspended because she posted a pic of an Easter simnel cake! Automated censorship gone wrong. She's gutted," Moseley tweeted.

Moseley included the offending picture with a second tweet.

"IT'S NOT A BOOB." she wrote.

Moseley's sister, Jennifer, who baked the cake, posted another picture to her own Instagram account.

"Dear @instagram this is a cake, not a boob #censorednipples #boobgate#givemymumbackherinstagramaccount" she wrote.

Moseley said her mother appealed the decision and received an email in response.

The email, which she shared with Mashable, stated:

"Your account has been disabled for not following the Instagram Community Guidelines, and we won't be able to reactivate it. We disable accounts that post content that is sexually suggestive or contains nudity. 

We understand that people have different ideas about what's okay to share on Instagram, but to keep Instagram safe, we require everyone to follow our guidelines."

Sue Moseley's plight went viral on social media, with Twitter and Instagram users mocking the bizarre act of censorship.

Instagram reinstated the mother's account with an apology Tuesday.

"We made a mistake here and restored the account as soon as we learned about it. Our apologies go out to Sue Moseley for the trouble we caused her," the website said in a statement provided to the BBC.

Sue Moseley has her Instagram account set to private, but Fiona shared her mother's victorious first post back on Twitter.

"I'm back! #FreeTheSimnel," the post reads.
