Library postpones children's Harry Potter event so adults can attend

PERTH, Australia, April 5 (UPI) -- An Australian library postponed its upcoming Harry Potter event, aimed at teens, after many adult fans expressed that they felt left out.

The City of Perth Library received an several comments from older Harry Potter fans and parents of young children, who questioned why the library had strictly limited the event to teens aged 12-18 and their parents.

Library staff attempted to explain that the event was curated by its Youth Services faculty and the events were specifically targeted at teens.

"[This event] has been carefully designed with activities and content relevant for this age range," they wrote. "We are overwhelmed with the response from people outside of the teenage bracket and may consider events suitable for other age brackets in the future."

They also later clarified that the Harry Potter theme was intended to draw teens to the new library and allow them to meet the staff.

Despite this explanation, many fans lamented over the idea that they would miss out on their chance to learn about owls or take a "potions class" from local experts so the library decided to postpone the event indefinitely.

"We want to be able to provide a magical experience for all Library patrons," they wrote on Facebook. "As such the Harry Potter event has been postponed and we are looking at how we can accommodate many more witches, wizards, muggles and their families."

No new date has been announced for the revamped event, but the library encouraged Harry Potter fans to "keep a watchful eye out for the Owl Postal Service" for more information.
