The plane landed safely at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston after departing from Sacramento and airline officials are unsure why she chose to deploy the slide, but believe it was done intentionally.
United Airlines released a statement following the incident, announcing that she had been removed from flight duties.
"We hold all of our employees to the highest standard. The unsafe behavior is unacceptable and does not represent the more than 20,000 flight attendants who ensure the safety of our customers," the statement said. "United is reviewing the matter and they have removed the employee from her flying duties."
According to KPRC 2, a member of the woman's family said she was doing well and that the issue was a private family matter.
A man was having trouble breathing at the back of the plane at the time, but it is unclear if this contributed to the flight attendant choosing to deploy the slide.
The man was escorted off of the plane in a wheelchair while the rest of the 159 passengers exited the plane normally.
