MALIBU, Calif., March 25 (UPI) -- A California man's attempt at a unique proposal took a turn for the worse when a drone dropped the engagement ring and it was nearly lost in the ocean.

A video posted to YouTube by user ographr documents Malibu man Tristan McGann's attempt to propose to his girlfriend, Stephanie, by having a drone drop the engagement ring into his hands at Point Dume.

"I like drones. No one else had done like a drone ring drop," McGann told Right This Minute. "I thought it would be a good idea."

The proposal, however, turned into an "epic fail" when the drone's electronic claw released early and dropped an object that appeared to go into the nearby waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The couple and their friends, who had come along to witness and film the proposal, spent the next 15 minutes searching for the ring, fearing it was lost forever in the vast ocean.

McGann said the couple's friend Tara "found it perched on the cliff edge two feet away from going into the ocean."

"It was so lucky," he said.

The couple said the proposal took place last year and they have been married for long enough that they don't mind sharing the bungled proposal with the world.
