The cake was found to contain a package filled with cocaine, and the ensuring investigation determined the man had four other cakes concealing similar packages.
Customs said the man, identified as Mexican citizen Jesus Martinez Ramirez, had brought a total of about 2 pounds of cocaine with him on his flight from Mexico City. Agents said the cocaine has an estimated street value of $33,000.
"This latest seizure demonstrates the vigilance of our CBP officers, and their excellence in detecting those who would try to smuggle these illegal substances," said Robert Perez, director of Field Operations New York for CBP.
Ramirez was arrested on narcotics smuggling charges and turned over to local authorities.
