SEBASTOPOL, Calif., March 10 (UPI) -- Police in California said officers responding to a report of persistent late-night door knocking arrived at the scene and apprehended the culprit -- an escaped goat.

Sebastopol Police Services said officers were dispatched at 1:38 a.m. Monday to investigate a report of a mysterious and persistent knocking on a resident's door.

"When officers arrived on scene the subject was still knocking on the front door, with their head," the department said in a Facebook post.

"The subject, a goat, was safely taken in to custody and reunited with their owner later that morning," the post said.

The department shared a photo of a smiling officer posing with the mischievous animal after it was apprehended.
