Turkeys surround New Jersey postal worker's truck

HILLSDALE, N.J., Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A flock of turkeys surrounded the vehicle of a New Jersey postal worker as he attempted to deliver mail in a suburban neighborhood.

The mailman hid in his truck and called police who used their sirens to scare the large fowl away from the vehicle.

"He was concerned that once we left they were going to go back after him," Tom Smith of Hillsdale Police Department told CBS New York. "I don't know if he's had a run-in with these turkeys before."

The turkeys had lived in the neighborhood for some time without incident, but the lack of fear of being hunted or trapped causes the birds not to fear people as Cronell University wildlife-human conflict expert Paul Curtis told NorthJersey.com.

"We don't stand our ground and act like predators," he said. "They don't have any negative consequences so, they won't fly or run off. They don't see people as a threat."

Despite the threat the mail carrier completed his route, delivering mail to several homes near the site of the attack.
