RIGA, Latvia, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- A team of divers in Latvia donned their cold weather gear and ventured beneath the ice to retrieve a sunken snowmobile from the bottom of a river.

Video recorded by one of the divers during the Jan. 22 operation near Riga shows lifeguards Edgar and Peter cut through the ice atop of the Daugava river and venture into the frigid waters to find the Ski-Doo on the river's floor.

The divers attached jugs of air to the sunken snowmobile to help it float to the surface, where a lever system was used to lift it out of the water.

The girlfriend of one of the divers said the snowmobile had ended up at the bottom of the river about a week earlier when the vehicle and its rider fell through the ice.

The rider was rescued and later contacted the man for help recovering his snowmobile.

The extent of the damage to the snowmobile from its week at the bottom of the water was unclear.
