SAUGUS, Mass., Dec. 28 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts 9-year-old's faith in Santa was "ruined" by a PlayStation 4 box containing a wooden block with a crude drawing of male genitals.

Brian Lundy said he and his wife, Kristin, bought the PS4 for his son, Scott, 9, at the Target store in Saugus and told him the gift was from Santa Claus on Christmas morning.

"He got a PS4 and he says 'this is the best present ever this is the best Christmas ever,'" Brian Lundy told WFXT-TV.

However, the boy's attitude soon changed when he opened the box to reveal a wooden model of a PS4 bearing the crudely-drawn image of male sex organs and a profane note signed "with love" from genitalia.

"He's crying and he's upset and he's in the playroom by himself and he just wants to be alone so at that point. I was crushed," said Kristin Lundy, the boy's stepmother.

Kristin Lundy said in a Facebook post the incident "ruined [Scott's] belief in Santa."

The couple said Target officials were apologetic and helpful.

"They not only gave us a new game system but they also gave us a $100 gift card as well as an additional game that the original game that was supposed to be in the box. Couldn't have been any kinder," Kristin Lundy said.

Target officials said thieves sometimes steal electronics and hide their tracks by putting wooden replicas in the boxes.

"We never like to disappoint our guests and are thankful for our store team's quick response to make things right," Lee Henderson with Target Communication said.

The Lundys said they told Scott the incident was the fault of a rogue elf whose actions will be reported to Santa Claus.
