JACKSON, Miss., Dec. 11 (UPI) -- A Mississipi interstate was shut down Friday morning after an 18-wheeler transporting cattle tipped over, causing live cows to spill out onto the road.

About 100 cows were set loose in the crash and the interstate was closed for nearly five hours as local authorities attempted to wrangle the livestock.

"He was supposed to turn one way instead of the other and tried to make that turn," Hinds County EOC Tracy Funches told WAPT News of the accident.

As of 10 a.m. reports said that about 94 cows had been reloaded onto the truck.

"The guys here handle cattle for a living and they were contacted and came right on," said Funches.

Some cows were killed in the crash and at least one was injured in a collision with an oncoming vehicle. Eight other cows also escaped the wreck and remain on the loose.

The driver was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injures.
