Other scattered items found Wednesday include dog treats, dog food and bird seed.
"We're scratching our heads as to how this could have happened," Chief Ryan Doss with the U.S. Coast Guard in Miami told TCPalm. "This is so uncommon. We're trying to see if this was caused by nature or humans."
Coast Guard official Hunter Weston said Wednesday morning 25 shipping containers fell from a barge Sunday, but investigators have not yet linked the spill with the washed-up groceries.
Doss said some of the containers may have opened and spilled their contents into the water.
Officials said some of the shipping containers held hazardous materials, including batteries.
Doss said anyone encountering shipping containers or batteries should contact the Coast Guard or local authorities.
"It is too early to say what may be the outcome" of the investigation, Doss said.
