BROWNSVILLE, Texas, Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A National Weather Service employee in Texas who stepped outside to record storm footage captured lightning striking a Doppler radar tower.

The video, posted to YouTube by NWSBrownsville, was recorded by technician Derek Urch, who stepped outside the NWS building in Brownsville late last month to record footage of a storm.

The footage shows a bolt of lightning score a direct strike on the Doppler radar tower just outside the building.

Urch hurriedly turns around and swipes his card to get back into the safety of the building.

The NWS said the strike knocked out the Doppler radar during a flash flood event.
