MIAMI, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- An elderly woman defended her home in Miami from burglars by firing her pistol at the would-be thieves.

88-year-old Arlene Orms fired her .25 caliber beretta through her front door, as burglars attempted to invade her home at around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Her attempt to defend her home was successful as the responding officer told WSVN Miami that the burglar never made it inside.

Arms has lived alone in her home since 1993 when her husband passed away. Police suspect that the culprits may have been successful in a previous robbery attempt on Oct. 29, during which Orms was robbed of several items, including one of her guns.

It's unclear whether the attempted robber was struck by the bullet, but police are monitoring local hospitals for injuries that fit the description.

Orms' front door was damaged during the break-in, but police and neighbors assisted in its repair while applauding Orms for her bravery.

"She took initiative to do something," neighbor Gladys Betancourt told CBS Miami. "He won't be back. I'll tell you that."
