PORTO POLLO, Italy, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Visitors to an Italian beach rescued a distressed shark by pulling a large fishing hook out of its mouth and one of the rescuers recorded the incident on video.

Saverio Porcari was recording with a GoPro camera Sunday at the beach in Porto Pollo, Sardinia, when the injured shark, which witnesses said appeared to be a blue shark, was seen thrashing in shallow waters.

About a dozen beachgoers dragged the shark by its tail fin onto the sand, where a group of men sat on the predator to hold it still while their colleagues slowly pulled the metal hook out of its mouth.

Porcari's footage, which was posted to YouTube, shows the beach visitors dragging the shark back out into the water and pointing it toward open seas.

Witnesses said the shark remained in the area for a few minutes before swimming away.
