CANGAS, Spain, June 24 (UPI) -- A motorist in northern Spain captured late night video of a brown bear sprinting down the road in front of the vehicle.
The video, shared on the YouTube page for hotel Casa Muniellos, shows the motorist's-eye-view of the road between Cangas and Somiedo in Asturias and the brown bear sprinting down the road in the vehicle's headlights.
The video's description says such sightings are becoming "increasingly common" on roads in the area. Jose Tunon, director of Asturias' Bear Foundation, said its unusual for bears to travel on roads, but the mating season causes the animals to do more moving.
"While bear numbers are rising steadily, it is still very unusual to see bears on the roads," Tunon told The Local. "This time of year, May and June, is mating season, so we do see bears moving around more."
Figures from the Asturias' Bear Foundation indicate there are about 200 Cantabrian brown bears in the wild, with most situated in the northern region of Asturias.
