The YouTube video, which coincides with the 20th anniversary of Back to the Future, the first installment in the film series that introduced the idea that hoverboards would become widespread by 2015, features brief footage of the levitating device giving off steam, but no one actually rides the board in the video. Advertisement Lexus explained the hoverboard, which has been in development for the past 18 months, operates magnetically, and the steam rising from the device is a product of the liquid nitrogen used to cool the superconductors and permanent magnets. The company confirmed the apparent concrete ground in the video includes a metal surface, which is required for the hoverboard -- and other previous examples of the technology -- to function. "The Lexus hoverboard represents true engineering innovation, and over the coming weeks we'll be bringing you regular updates on the progress of this extraordinary project.
