Man caught on camera toppling 1,000-pound statue in New Jersey

Toms River Statue Damaged by VandalOn June 14, 2015 at approximately 3:20 am a man did damage to a life size sculpture that was in front of 216 Main Street in downtown Toms River. The man was seen on video surveillance approaching the statue and knocking it over. He appears to be a white man with a thin build. He is also wearing a watch or bracelet on his right wrist. Recently, twenty bronze statues were placed around the business district as a cultural enhancement. They are all on a four month loan from Seward Johnson Grounds for Sculpture. TOMS RIVER, N.J., June 19 (UPI) -- Police in New Jersey are trying to identify a man caught on video putting "significant effort" into knocking over a 1,000-pound statue.

Toms River Police said security cameras in the city's downtown recorded a man trying -- and initially failing -- to knock over the bronze statue about 3:20 a.m. Sunday.

The statue, one of 20 placed around the business district as "cultural enhancements" on loan from Seward Johnson Grounds for Sculpture, eventually topples as the man violently rocks it back and forth.

"The statues typically weigh over 1,000 pounds and, as seen on the video, take a significant effort to knock them over," police said in a Facebook post.
