NEW YORK, April 16 (UPI) -- A New York non-profit said it has posted about 50 signs around the city reading, "No Catcall Zone" and "No Catcalling Anytime."
Feminist Apparel, a non-profit clothing company, said the signs were posted around Brooklyn and Manhattan in collaboration with Philadelphia-based group Pussy Division with the "goal simply being to raise awareness of Anti-Street Harassment Week and create some further dialogue surrounding the issue," Feminist Apparel project coordinator Alan Martofel told Mic.com.
The official website for 2015 Anti-Street Harassment Week says the April 12-18 event is aimed at bringing an end to "catcalls, sexist or sexual comments, homophobic and transphobic slurs, flashing, groping, stalking, and assault in public spaces."
"Gender-based street harassment is a global problem. It makes us feel less safe, it restricts where we go. IT MUST END," the website says.
One of the street sign designs features the image of a cat being harassed by two stick figure men, with words reading, "No Catcall Zone." The other design emulates a "No Parking" sign and reads, "No Catcalling Anytime" with an arrow pointing in both directions.
There have also been reported sightings of the signs in Philadelphia and a project organizer said the groups hope to have signs in every borough of New York by the end of the week.
