RIVERSIDE, Calif., March 18 (UPI) -- A cat found stowing away in a U-Haul trailer in California was found to have disappeared from his South Carolina home nearly two years ago.
Riverside County Animal Services in California said Kevin the cat was found during a state Food & Agriculture inspector's routine check of a U-Haul trailer at the Arizona-California border and the woman pulling the trailer said she had been unaware of the feline's presence.
Animal services officials said a scan of the cat's microchip revealed his owner as Cheryl Walls of Anderson, S.C.
Walls said Kevin had gone missing in June 2013.
"I assumed someone must have picked him up," Walls said. "Now he has seen more of the country than me."
Animal Services Director Robert Miller said officials are arranging to have Kevin flown back home to South Carolina.
"We have handled some pets with crazy back stories, and this is one more for the list," Miller said. "The good news is we know the owner, she wants her pet back, and we'll make that happen."
