MELBOURNE, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Ride-sharing service Uber held a one-day-only promotion Thursday in Australia allowing customers to order a "kitten car" and have baby cats come to visit.

Uber said the UberKittens promotion, designed to raise awareness of adoptable pets, was available Thursday only in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Geelong and the Gold Coast.

The UberKittens service cost about $31 and involved a "kitten car" allowing customers to play with the felines for about 15 minutes.

The company previously tested an UberKittens scheme in New York and a similar service involving puppies was available for one day in 10 U.S. cities to coincide with the Super Bowl.

Proceeds from Thursday's promotion will go to animal shelters in each of the participating cities, Uber said.

"It's kitten season and our adoption center is overflowing with kittens of various ages, genders and colors looking for homes," the Lort Smith Animal Hospital's adoption center, which partnered with Uber for the promotion in Melbourne, said on its website. "Uber will drive the kittens and Lort Smith staff to the workplace where we'll talk about the joy that pets can bring to our lives and also the responsibilities that come with pet ownership."

Uber spokeswoman Katie Curran said the event proved popular Thursday.

"Demand has been through the roof and we've seen some amazing pictures and videos of people enjoying snuggles with the kittens," she told the Brisbane Times.
