WHIPSNADE, England, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The Whipsnade Zoo in England has released footage of a pygmy hippo born the day after Christmas exploring his new environment.
The zoo, run by the Zoological Society London, said the male pygmy hippo, who has not yet been named, was born on Boxing Day to mother Flora, who vets said has been responding well to cancer treatments.
Zoo officials said the baby was welcomed by the European endangered species program, which has been experiencing a shortage of male pygmy hippos.
The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists pygmy hippos as endangered on its red list of threatened species.
