Artist seeks crowdfunding for 'Pizza Bed'

Claire Manganiello said the Pizza Bed was inspired by her desire to "crawl inside" a warm slice of pizza she bought on a cold night.

NEW YORK, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A New York artist whose mockup of a "Pizza Bed" went viral is seeking crowdfunding to make the delicious-looking sleeping surface a reality.

The Pizza Bed, dreamed up by Brooklyn artist Claire Manganiello, is composed of sauce-printed sheets, pillow cases designed to resemble crust and a duvet cover printed with a cheese-and-pepperoni design to turn any standard twin, full, queen- or king-size bed into a sleepable, if not edible, pizza.

"It's 3 a.m. on a Sunday morning, I'm shivering on a Brooklyn street corner in the dead of winter, clutching a slice of pizza and wishing aloud that I could actually crawl inside of it, where it's safe and warm. Suddenly, somewhere deep inside my frozen and beer-fueled brain, Pizza Bed was born. Later that morning (after some coffee and Photoshop) the design landed in the 'weird stuff' section of my online portfolio," Manganiello wrote on the Kickstarter page for the Pizza Bed.

The artist said she decided to crowdfund the project when her design went viral about a year later.

"I decided it was time to make this dream a reality for all my pizza-loving brethren," she wrote. "I'm here because I love pizza and I want to sleep inside it. If you feel as strongly as I do about the most perfect food in the universe, then the Pizza Bed is the bed for you."

The Kickstarter page is seeking to raise $125,848 by Dec. 29 to put the Pizza Bed sets into production. The page had raised $16,272 by noon Friday.
