Austrian online store sells prisoner-made crafts

The crafts for sale include metal figurines, wine racks, board games, clocks and Christmas decorations.

VIENNA, Nov. 14 (UPI) -- The Austrian Justice Ministry has opened an online store to sell prisoner-made crafts including handbags created from old jeans.

The ministry's online store, which went live Nov. 1, promises "gift ideas for any occasion," with prisoner-made goods including metal figurines, wine racks, board games, clocks and Christmas decorations.

The crafts also include handbags made from old jeans.

"Many of our prisoners are talented craftsmen," Justice Ministry spokesman Peter Prechtl told The Local.

Prechtl said the prisoners are being paid a salary for creating the objects.
