HALF MOON BAY, Calif., Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Napa man John Hawkley broke the North American record for largest pumpkin with a 2,058-pound weigh in at the Half Moon Bay pumpkin weigh-off.
Hawkley and his wife Patty won more than $13,000, earning $6 per pound and $1,000 for having the largest pumpkin in California.
"I don't know," said Hawkley about his growing method. "I just kept the water constant. I didn't overfeed it. I took what I got."
Russ Pugh, who had a pumpkin weigh in at 1,828 pounds, was disqualified when his gourd began leaking on the scale.
California pumpkin growers faced some challenges this year from the California drought that has devastated crops in the state.
"It really depends on where you live and what the water restrictions are," said Russ Pugh, a Santa Rosa-area grower. "We have a 30 percent voluntary reduction, so I grew seven plants instead of 10."
