BIRMINGHAM, England, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A Chinese couple said they drove more than 12,000 from Shanghai to Birmingham, England, so their England-designed van could "come home."
Yaoguo Chen and Jie Wu, both 48, said they spent two years planning a route from Shanghai to Birmingham that took them through Mongolia, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Holland and France during the July 1 - Aug. 26 drive.
The couple told Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua they were inspired by their Maxus V80 van, which was built in Shanghai but based on an earlier model produced by Birmingham firm LDV until 2008, when Russian owner GAZ Group folded the company.
"Owning a Maxus is the big reason we wanted to come to Birmingham. The vehicle is from Birmingham, it was designed by LDV and it has come home," Jie Wu said.
"We quit our jobs to do this. I worked for an American company called Abbott and Yaoguo Chen was a press photographer for Shanghai Money Weekly," Jei Wu said. "Our friends and family think we are crazy but we are very happy to have done it."
The couple said they are now embarking on a sightseeing tour.
"We really wanted to come to Birmingham but are also keen to see other parts of England," Jie Wu said.
