"I would do a good job for the county," Olinger told the Los Angeles Times. "I have a real chance of at least making the [general election] ticket."
The 87-year-old was considering running as a member of the nudist party, but opted to go with the Democratic Party instead.
His wife said that her husband is running because "he watches too much of that Jon Stewart" and also admitted that Olinger is not a huge fan of clothes. "Well, it's not as if he walks around everywhere naked, but he does like to lay out in the sun naked," she said.
Olinger will be going up against incumbent Island County Sheriff Mark Brown, a Republican.
"Why would anyone want a Republican sheriff?" Olinger said to the South Whidbey Record. "I can't understand if he's a good man, why is he running as a Republican? Does he think he has to appease the tea party?"
The prospective sheriff has previously worked as a surveyor, driver's education teacher and social worker.
